University Common Unit Code Description

The University Common Unit Code system (CUC) was developed in order to assign a code to each single unit or entity of the institution. This code is utilized by all University application systems that incorporate coding for units.

The codes include all institutional entities existing in the various systems within MSU. Those units coded include purely instructional units (i.e., French), Budgetary Accounts (i.e., Long Term Disability), and still other units for which a distribution (or mail) function is indicated (i.e., Investment & Trust Management).

The D03 system (the AIS-developed application to maintain CUCs) is used to maintain information about each unit. Specific detail information contained within D03 follows: complete unit title; alphabetical abbreviation of instructional units; standard 18 character abbreviation; a type designation indicating the characteristics of the unit; a 2 character major administrative unit code (MAU); and the 3 character unit or department code.

Unit or department codes may appear in more than one MAU, as many units are shared or cross-referenced. The unit code for each entity remains the same regardless of the associated MAU. MAU and CUC listings are available from the Common Unit Code Website (see link above). Obsolete codes are labeled such and are retained in the system for at least one year. Inactive CUCs may be retained for future use on the condition that the unit and functions will reappear in the future.

NOTE:  The three character alpha department code abbreviation is no longer valid.  This code was established pre-SIS to characterize instructional units.  With the advent of SIS, subject codes now define courses, and are not intended to define units.  As such,  OPB will not change the alpha code within the D03 system, and expect it to be discontinued in any future enhancements to the system.

Unit type codes are intended to communicate the nature of the unit, and are descriptive in nature. Below is a list of Unit Type Codes:

B - Budgeted unit of the University
R - Primary budget is generated by a revolving account
A - Budgeted as an auxiliary unit
C - Cross reference listing for a unit
P - University personnel are appointed to these units
D - Distribution or functional unit
I - Instructional Unit
